Hand Sanitizer

Due to COVID-19 mandated closures and quarantine efforts we are faced with challenging times. Restaurants and bars are forced to close in-house service and only allowed to offer curbside and take-away service. Breweries are left with an abundance of keg beer inventory with no route to serve. As the keg beer reaches it’s code date, it will have to be dumped and breweries are forced to take a loss. Distilleries have been forced to close customer serving operations, but with FDA guidance, are allowed to now produce hand sanitizer to the WHO (World Health Organization) Formula 1 compounding formulation. Pacific Coast Spirits is one of a few distilleries in San Diego to change over their production to help meet the demand of hand sanitizer. They are working hard supply our San Diego Communities with hand sanitizer filling the demand needed in this time of crisis.

WHO recommends alcohol-based handrubs based on the following factors:

  1. Evidence-based, intrinsic advantages of fast-acting and broad-spectrum microbicidal activity with a minimal risk of generating resistance to antimicrobial agents;
  2. Suitability for use in resource-limited or remote areas with lack of accessibility to sinks or other facilities for hand hygiene (including clean water, towels, etc.);
  3. Capacity to promote improved compliance with hand hygiene by making the process faster, more convenient and immediately accessible at the point of patient care;
  4. Economic benefit by reducing annual costs for hand hygiene, representing approximately 1% of extra-costs generated by health care-associated infection
  5. Minimization of risks from adverse events because of increased safety associated with better acceptability and tolerance than other products.

Final concentrations:
• Ethanol 80% (v/v),
• Glycerol 1.45% (v/v),
• Hydrogen peroxide 0.125% (v/v)

Creation of a Collaboration

The SD Sanitizer Collab is the creation of Pacific Coast Spirits going one step further, working to help our fellow breweries get out from under the abundance of keg inventory during the COVID-19 crisis. Pacific Coast Spirits is purchasing the beer at cost rather than receiving it in donation. This allows the breweries to get out from under the loss and cost of the now out of code beer or beer not able to be sold.
